MusicMasters Jazz: 1990

This review first appeared in the December 11, 1992 issue of the North County Blade-Citizen (now North County Times).

With a lineup featuring Dave Brubeck, Jim Hall, Stanley Turrentine, Benny Carter and Louie Bellson among others, it would be pretty hard to miss with this CD.

The songs may be traditional – "We Three Kings," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," et al – but the renditions are anything but. Yet the jazz interpretations of these familiar pieces maintain the dignity of the compositions while lending them another facet. This album works so well because of the artists' combination of respect for tradition and an ability to redefine a work while capturing its essence.

And yes, it is Bellson (of course) who gets to play "Little Drummer Boy."
