Some
folks never did warm up to the raccoons. But hate mail was a tradition
at the Aztec, where those of us with opinion columns would sometimes
write the most outrageous stuff we could simply to see who could attract
the most letters. Few of us could ever run in the same league as the raccoons,
though ...

The raccoons got so popular
for awhile at San Diego State, that we borrowed a button-maker from the
sister of Andy "Windows for Dummies" Rathbone, back when he was still a
copy editor at the paper, and started selling buttons with little raccoons
sayings and other assorted weirdness:
We even had spinoffs; Archie Bunker led to Maude and The Jeffersons, we had the Rich Republican Pig:
We had plans ... big plans ... t-shirts, greeting cards, coffee mugs ... the whole Garfield routine ...
