Christmas on the banjo

Glory Shone Around: A Christmas Collection
Glory Shone Around: A Christmas Collection
By Tony Trischka

Rounder Records: 1995

This review first appeared in the December 1, 1995 issue of the North County Blade-Citizen (now North County Times).

An album of banjo music for Christmas?

Well, yes – but consider that it's Tony Trischka on the banjo, joined by Pete Seeger, the Turtle Island String Quartet and a slew of fellow banjo masters.

The music is the standard fare – "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Sleigh Ride," "Deck the Halls," "Good King Wenceslas" – performed with style and panache. The highlight is television/radio host Charles Osgood's narration of an early 20th century Christmas story, "Banjo Cheer."
