This review first appeared in the May 28, 1993 issue of the North County Blade-Citizen (now North County Times).

The concept behind "Skywatching" is a bit unusual – it's the "soundtrack" for Arizona Highways magazine. The magazine supplied the stunning photography for the CD booklet, and the song titles and musical themes are derived from Southwestern topics. heavy on the Hopi.

Odder still, it works. Michael Gettel's piano, combined with Richard Warner's flutes and Nancy Rumbel's oboe and English horn, create a mystical, exotic sound that captures the feeling of the Arizona high desert. Gettel's compositions borrow from native American melodies and harmonies, while maintaining their accessibility.
